Key points

01

Refusing blame

Rejects the language that shames, such as “jete pitit”.

02

The right to choose

Builds its argument, dramatically, around that right.

03

Traditional medicine

Explores the care held by the matrones.

04

Precarious access

The position of Women with no access to safe services.

05

Silence and prejudice

The harm done by beliefs that force Women toward clandestine and dangerous services.

06

Inhumane practice

Names it, rather than describing around it.

NÈGÈS MAWON turns art into a language: a way of opening dialogue across different media, and of crossing what Women are demanding with what artists can make. Art carrying the cause of Women and Girls.

Maternal deaths have followed abortions carried out in dangerous and clandestine conditions. Criminalization, prejudice rooted in religious belief, and the absence of information obstruct even post-abortion care. It is a subject that makes people uncomfortable, which is exactly why raising awareness of it became part of the organization’s advocacy.

Danta is a play by the actor and Feminist artist Joeanne Joseph, presented at the Festival Féministe NÈGÈS MAWON in July 2022. It is based on the true story of a deaf and mute mother whose daughter died from the complications of an unsafe abortion. It speaks about the impossibility of discussing sexuality with adolescents, the heavy secrecy around sexual assault, and the right to a life.

“Jete pitit” is the phrase used in Haiti for a Woman who has had an abortion. It means to throw away a child. The play refuses it.
